The Honey Mesquite Singing Tree of Belonging, True Connection and Authenticity

The Honey Mesquite Singing Tree of Belonging, True Connection and Authenticity was facilitated  by Sister Esperanza Principio. The project was supported by two Maryknoll Lay Missioners, her Maryknoll Mission Iniative (MMI) Co-Coordinator, a staff of Maryknoll Society, staff of Maryknoll Lay Missioners with her young child and a member of the Religious of the Good Shepherd Congregation. The Lead Design Team and collaborators worked in different phases of the project. Connections and camaraderie are reflected in this work of art, enriched with sharing of joys and pains as well as hopes and dreams. Making the mural led to a better understanding, appreciation, discovery and acceptance of oneself and others. While preparing the galaxy,  the color pink was added with a surprising powerful presence, reflecting women’s power and delight in the work.  The paper elements of honey mesquite pods, flowers and compound leaves were combined with paper singing birds, doves and roadrunners that frequent the tree. These were all glued to the canvas. The tree depicts that the heart of being authentic is essential for experiencing love. The mural portrays a space where true connection may flourish and everyone belongs.
