The Window to the World Singing Tree - Living With Those Who Came Before

The Window to the World Singing Tree was created with a Lead Design Team of 12 people, ages 9 through 80, in July, 2026 at the International Museum of Art in El Paso, Texas. Laurie Marshall, founder of Unity Through Unity and the Singing Tree Mural Project, put together the ideas of the Lead Design Team into a Master Design. The mural was inspired by the International Museum of Art's Window to the World collection of 10,000 from 110 countries, gathered over 30 years by elementary school educator Sue Koenig. The window on the left represents the past, the middle represents the present, and the one on the right represents the future.
Throughout the month of August, about 250 community members helped to paint the mural and add imagery on paper cut-outs, which were glued to the surface. Imagery on the leaves honored ancestors; the birds symbolize dreams; candles and stars stand for those who are gone; the dinosaur tracks (based on the real 98-million-year-old Magnoavipes dinosaur of El Paso) and desert willow blossoms are blessings from the past. The baby feet and palo verde blossoms are hopes for the future. The painting is about the fact that the ancestors want us to succeed and that adults have a shared mission to help build a world that is worthy of the children.
The process of creating the mural accompanied an exhibition of a Forest of 18 Singing Tree Murals at the International Museum of Art. A catalogue of the show can be purchased here.
