09f2a749-29d4-42a2-9c0d-b14a5a300b4f Back to Gallery Mural # 145 Casa Singing Tree of Trust, Love, and Community 1/1 The Casa Singing Tree project began with a Lead Design Team that included the three owners and twenty managers and executives. They selected the theme of trust, love, and community, designed the mural, and painted the background. Then the five UTC facilitators took the mural to CASA Ford, Buick, Kia, Nissan in El Paso; Casa Autoplex in Las Cruces and Casa Toyota, Alamogordo, New Mexico. 419 employees contributed images to complete the mural. For many, the leaves symbolize their vision of heaven, the flying birds stood for dreams, the sitting birds stood for you, the stars for someone who has passed away and the acorns for a vision of the future. There are many variations. The Gaia Maker Space of University of Texas at El Paso gave the project use of their laser printers, where over 1000 paper elements were cut out. The mural portrays a Burges oak, the favorite of the founder of Casa Autogroup, Wally Lowenfield. Portraits of Wally and his wife, Patricia, are painted on the earth under the tree. The spirit of Patricia is in the upper left corner looking down upon the abundance of CASA Autogroup. Wally, as a sleeping giant, rests against the left hand side of the oak tree. The couple whose likeness is carved into the tree trunk includes Wally’s son, Clay and and his daughter-in-law, Rhonda. Wally’s three grandsons, who currently operate the dealership, are represented in the branches with them and their wives carved into hearts. The 442 people at Casa Auto Group who created the Casa Singing Tree of Trust, Love, and Community experienced the depth of the connection they have with each other, many for the first time. They began building the wider community of Casa Auto through stepping outside their routines and seeing each other not as sales people, as service people, as accountants or managers or owners—but as human beings. They had an immediate experience that their contribution to the mural and to Casa Auto Group is unique and essential, that each one has something to give that only she or he can give. At Casa they say: Casa is home, and home is heaven —and for the people at Casa creating connections with each other, building their community on a foundation of love and trust. We took our starting point from the vision Casa Auto Group has of itself: Casa is home, and home is heaven. The Casa Singing Tree project began with a Lead Design Team that included the three owners and twenty managers and executives. They selected the theme of trust, love, and community, designed the mural, and painted the background. Then the five UTC facilitators took the mural to six locations for employees to add leaves, birds, stars—and for this mural, acorns, because the tree the Lead Design Team chose is the Texas live oak, a favorite of Wally’s, a tree that spreads its branches wide enough to include everyone beneath it. 93b4b1cb-9704-4b67-9077-4e6f70bb2ce5 Back to Gallery Mural # 50 The Manzanita Singing Tree of Kindness 1/1 Ukiah High School students in Evelina Boullouard-Rodriguez's science and French classes designed and painted this 8’ x 12’ acrylic painting. Fires had claimed houses and a classmate and the students wanted to focus on kindness. They included two trees because kindness is about relationships and depicted the planets as the chakras. Over 300 science students also added imagery on birds and leaves that explored the questions of 'What is a memorable act of kindness that you received or gave?' and 'Is there someone you were unkind to whose trust you need to restore?'" Kate Marianchild , author of Secrets of the Oak Woodlands , consulted on the project. She taught us about how manzanita trees reproduce by a process called sonification, which has evolved over millions of years. A bee unhooks its wings and vibrates at a perfect pitch of C, which causes the pollen to burst forth. The fact that the manzanita pollinates through music is perfect for the Singing Tree Project. The Manzanita Singing Tree of Kindness Mural is located at the Ukiah High School campus. Kathleen guided a ceremony along with 2 of the Indigenous Grandmothers. Grandmother Mary Lyons and Grandmother Flora De Mayo. During the ceremony they were blessed by 7 hawks who circled overhead. 175 people joined for a Peace Fire Circle and Water Ceremony. Once the water was ceremoniously gathered from the Chicago River the attendees carried it up to the center of the fire circle. A canvas was laid across a large round bamboo tray. Each of the 7 continents were represented by seven earth payment colors. Which was sprinkled onto the canvas in prayer. The ceremonial water was in a small blue vase in the center of the tray. A feather was placed in the water to be used as a conduit for Peace. As each participant received the canvas on the tray, they set their intentions for peace throughout the world as they swirled the feather in the water and spread the natural Earth Pigments onto the canvas. 25724b4a-b785-469a-88c0-64bbe2ea44e9 < Back Grant Grover Mural 1/1 “What Kind of World Do You Want to Live In?” was the driving question of the 8' x 4' mural. A team of wise and thought-provoking college students at Grant Grover School, part of College of Marin shared their responses: A world where everyone can give their gifts, where people walk the city in peace, where there’s more Nature, butterflies and horses, where there is safety for people and animals and clean water, where there is no alcoholism or drug use, no name calling and fighting, a place where there are smiles and laughter, where people learn how to fix breakdowns and where Love = Life without Limits. From this conversation, 8th grade Novato Charter School student Gabriella Borges and Laurie Marshall made a black and white study. The students colored the studies. Laurie put together their color ideas into a master design and facilitated the students painting the mural. San Rafael, CA, USA Previous Next
